Pricing Strategy: Knowing Your Worth

The price was set years ago by glancing at what a competitor charged, and it has never been checked against what the work actually costs you. So the hours grow, the income does not, and every hesitation from a client turns into a discount before anyone even asks for one. This lecture treats pricing as a decision rather than a feeling. It covers what your own hour costs, what price the business needs in order to reach a realistic income, how to move prices with clients you have had for years, and how to say the number and then stop talking.

The content is matched in advance to your audience and goals on a short fitting call.

What your audience takes away

  • Work out what an hour of your own work really costs.
  • Say your price out loud without apologising for it.
  • Raise prices with long standing clients without losing them.
  • Charge for the extra round, the extra meeting, the small favour.
  • Use packages and tiers instead of a blunt across the board rise.

Who this lecture is for

Written for people who set their own prices. Freelancer communities, professional guilds and coworking networks fit naturally, as do regional business centres and municipal small business programmes, and accountants and bookkeepers hosting a client evening, since pricing is the question their clients ask them constantly. Trade associations for photographers, designers, therapists and trainers recognise it immediately, sales managers book it when their people discount to close, and franchise headquarters use it to hold price discipline across branches.

Frequently asked questions

Does it deal with raising prices on existing clients, including how to word it?

Yes, and it is the part most owners come for. Almost every pricing resource explains how to price a new client and goes silent on the veteran still paying a rate from years ago, which is the increase people genuinely fear.

Our competitors do not publish prices. How can anyone price against that?

That is the normal situation in services and in selling to other businesses, and it is why copying the market is not a strategy. Pricing built from your own costs, your capacity and the value delivered survives the absence of competitor information.

Is it for product businesses or service businesses?

Both sit in any owner audience and the logic holds for both. Products carry visible costs and invisible ones, services carry an owner's hour that is rarely counted at all, and the discomfort of naming a price is identical either way.

Could it work for a sales team that discounts every deal to close it?

Yes. Discounting to hit a target is a pricing problem wearing a sales costume, and it is usually caused by people who cannot defend the number rather than by customers who cannot pay it.

Does it cover unbilled extras, the additional round and the small favour?

Yes. Scope creep quietly removes more margin from small businesses than discounts do, and it is rarely the client's doing. It grows out of a boundary that was never set at the start, which makes it a pricing decision as much as a service one.

Part of the audience is experienced and part is new. Will it work?

Yes. The depth is set in advance on the fitting call, examples are matched to the sector, and the base assumes no prior knowledge. Audience questions give the experienced their room too.
