Financial Management and Cash Flow for Small Businesses

The profit report says you earned well, the bank account says otherwise, and nobody explains the gap. In a small business the money problem is rarely accounting. It is timing, between what customers owe you, what suppliers expect, and the fixed obligations that arrive whether the month was good or not. This lecture stays at management level, the level where you decide this week instead of reading about last quarter. It works through the figures an owner genuinely needs to watch, what they are telling you, and what to do when they move in the wrong direction.

The content is matched in advance to your audience and goals on a short fitting call.

What your audience takes away

  • Read the gap between profit on paper and money in the bank.
  • Follow the cash coming in and going out week by week.
  • Spot a squeeze weeks before it reaches your account.
  • Judge whether the business can carry a new fixed commitment.
  • Ask your bookkeeper questions that change decisions, not just report them.

Who this lecture is for

Written for owner audiences rather than finance staff. It suits Maof centres and municipal business departments running subsidised owner training, accounting, bookkeeping and payroll offices holding a client education evening, self employed associations and freelancer networks booking a single session, and regional business houses serving owners in the periphery. Conference producers building a business track use it for rooms mixing a service business, a shop and a food business, whose cash cycles are nothing alike.

Frequently asked questions

Our members already have accountants. Is this accounting content or something else?

It is management level. An accountant reports what happened, which is necessary and always late for a decision you have to make on Tuesday. This is about the figures an owner reads themselves, and it replaces nothing your accountant does.

Will anyone be asked to reveal their own figures in front of the room?

No. Money is the one subject owners will not raise a hand about, and a session that exposes people teaches them nothing. The thinking each person does stays with them, and anything discussed openly stays about method rather than amounts.

Does it cover pricing, or only tracking the cash?

Cash flow is the frame, and pricing appears as the reason the cash behaves the way it does. If pricing is the main thing your audience needs, say so on the preparation call and it can carry more weight.

Is it tied to a particular invoicing or accounting system?

No. Nothing is sold and no vendor is endorsed, which matters for a business community or a lender that cannot be seen recommending a platform. What is taught works the same in a spreadsheet as in accounting software.

Does it work for a seasonal business, where most of the income lands in a short stretch of the year?

Yes, and seasonality is precisely where averages mislead. A business that earns its year in a season has to fund the quiet months out of money that has already arrived, which is a planning question rather than an earnings question.

Part of the audience is experienced and part is new. Will it work?

Yes. The depth is set in advance on the fitting call, examples are matched to the sector, and the base assumes no prior knowledge. Audience questions give the experienced their room too.
