Business Model Canvas
Also known as: BMC, business canvas, startup canvas
Definition
A one-page strategic management tool used to define, visualize, and analyze the key components of a business model.
A visual chart structured around nine essential building blocks: value propositions, customer segments, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, and cost structure.
Why it matters
Instead of writing a lengthy business plan that quickly becomes outdated, the canvas lets founders map out and test their business logic on a single page. It helps align team members and identify critical risks in the value chain.
Improvement tips
- Use the canvas as a dynamic document and update it as you learn from customer feedback.
- Start by focusing on the relationship between your value proposition and your target customer segments.
- Validate the assumptions in each of the nine blocks through real-world experiments.
Common mistakes
- Treating the canvas as a static document to be completed once and filed away.
- Filling the blocks with vague descriptions instead of specific, measurable hypotheses.
- Failing to align the nine blocks, such as describing a customer segment that cannot be reached by the listed channels.
